Angelina Jolie’s extreme diet that is getting all the buzz is a radical starvation diet. It is obviously working, but is it healthy? Well, yes and no.
But more to the point, is it sensible? To that the answer is, definitely not. Nor is it sustainable or lasting, as you can see for yourself.
Here is what a typical day is like on Angelina’s 21-Day Martha’s Vineyard Diet Detox. It offers “nourishment” every hour on the hour for 12 hours. The “food” comes packaged as part of the cost of the diet.
Hour 1 (Breakfast):
First thing on awakening, take a cleansing formula designed to help rid your body of toxins. Then it’s on to breakfast, which is 1 ounce of a fruit extract mixed into 6 ounces of water, 1 cup of herbal tea (hot or cold) and an 8-ounce glass of water. Also, take a digestive enzymes tablet to help aid digestion. Adding the herb stevia, a natural appetite suppressant, is optional.
Hour 2:
1 8-ounce glass of water
Hour 3:
1 8-ounce glass of water blended with 1 scoop of a substance called Essential Greens
Hour 4:
1 8-ounce glass of water and/or herbal tea (hot or cold)
Hour 5 (lunch):
1 8-ounce glass of “live” fresh juiced vegetables OR 1 8-ounce glass of water with 1 scoop of a vegetable formula. Take 1 digestive enzymes tablet.
Hour 6:
1 8-ounce glass of water and/or herbal tea (hot or cold)
Hour 7:
1 8-ounce glass of water blended with 1 scoop of the vegetable formula that was the option at lunch
Hour 8:
1 8-ounce glass of water and/or herbal tea (hot or cold)
Hour 9:
1 8-ounce glass of water mixed with 1 scoop Essential Greens formula
Hour 10:
1 cup homemade pureed soup, 1 cup broth, 8-ounces of water, and 1 cup hot herbal tea. Also take amino acids (optional) and a digestive enzymes tablet.
Hour 11:
1 8-ounce glass of water and/or hot herbal tea and 1 ounce of aloe (optional), an herbal formula that is sold in health food stores.
Hour 12:
Another inner cleansing formula
Bedtime
Optional sleep aid: 1 teaspoon of a substance called CALM, available in health food stores
Starvation diet of the stars
There are virtually no calories in this diet, so it is really a fast. I am only assuming that the formulas are providing essential nutrients to sustain life – though probably barely. So you can see why the idea of a detoxifying quick weight-loss diet would appeal to certain celebrities, such as Madonna and Stella McCartney, who have helped put this diet on the hot list.
Fasting, in and of itself, to detoxify the body is not a bad thing, but fasts are safe and healthy only for the short term – two or three days. Also, they can only be considered safe only for people who are otherwise healthy. An extreme fast, such as this, should definitely be supervised by a qualified health professional.
Can you lose 21 pounds in 21 days doing this? Yes – if you have enough fat on your body. But the weight will just come back, once you start eating again – even if you are eating healthy foods.
So, if Angelina is cranky and not looking herself, as reported, that’s no surprise. Not only is she famished, but she may be seeing the weight loss start to slow.
So, how would you rate this Diet rate according to the 3 Ds:
· Dead on – it’s healthy and will work in the long run
· Desperate – a no-sweat, quick fix that doesn’t hurt beyond hunger
· Delusional -- totally unrealistic and, in the long run, an effort that gets you nowhere
I say it’s Delusional. What about you?
